Chapter 1 – Part II

Alex looked that line. He was nervous – in those moments, he was always nervous. It was not the first time he was doing that, but his experience did not made him feel comfortable about that mission. On the contrary: each moment, he felt everything was becoming more difficult, and it would be harder to do what he should do. In the last week, a colleague of him had been caught and no one could say exactly where he was. He was not the first one to disappear, and would not be the last, and Alex knew this.

However, Alex would pretend that everything was fine. He mentally trained his text: it was necessary he acted magnificently. As he used to say: he should be able to convince his mother, if she was still alive. Obviously she was not: as many of his fellows, he had no family. Neither mother, nor father, nor brothers, nor cousins, nor wife nor children. He was alone, so he would not care that his death did others suffer about him.

In front of him, a lively mistress. She was taking with her presents to all her family :

“My grandsons will love these presents. You know: Granma’s heart can’t avoid it. All the time I come here, I buy many presents. And they love it! My daughter loves it too, ‘cause I always bring something to her. She used to complain here they don’t have the fragrances she likes, so I bring them. And there is also my son-in-law. It’s hard to find something to him, but I always find. Look, what do you think? As a man? Be sincere.

Alex looked that mistress a little bit disturbed: he wanted to be concentrated about what was happening. But he could not avoid answering her.

“In my opinion, it’s a wonderful object, madam. Something that just a refined woman would be able to buy.” He answered, after looking a pendant she was showing him. She smiled:

“Of course it’s not the only present I’m bringing to him, but… I think this is the better thing he could receive, isn’t it?”

“Of course, madam.”

“Are you coming from which country? I can’t determine it by your accent…”

“I’m from Olympia, madam.”

“Based in your accent, I would not say so...”

He smiled, but before he could say anything, that mistress was called. It was good: he could return to his “5 seconds of anxiety” and wait his turn to be called.

“Passport, please. You are…?”

“Alex Brahins.” He smiled and showed his passport to the guard in front of him. The guard checked the document: “What’s the purpose of your visit, sir?”

“Business. My firm wants to make some contracts here in your country. I’ll stay here for some weeks, trying to do sign these contracts.”

“It looks like a boring work….” The guard said, smiling and stamping the passport. Alex smiled – not at the commentary, but because he had been accepted in that country.

“I need to eat.” He answered, taking back his passport.

“Good time here, Mr. Brahins.”

“Thanks.”

Alex leaved the immigration area. He was in. He managed it.
