The spy Chapter 3 - Part VII Simone was hugging Cesar. They would not have honeymoon – they had concluded it would not be adequate to have that kind of celebration when a war was happening. But they decided to sleep in that first day in a five-star hotel, where they would be together in that weekend. “Are you awake?” Cesar asked Simone. “Yes...” “Can’t you sleep?” “We had a busy day today. I... I still can’t understand we are married, now...” “It is strange, isn’t it? After everything it happens with us, it sounds impossible to understand we are together now...” “Do you forgive me for quitting you? For staying without you for so long?” “Only if you stop to say you are sorry. I know that my mother was very inconvenient with you. I was blind, but it was obvious...” “You had to defend your mother as her son.” “But I almost lost you...” “You almost lost me, but you didn’t...” “Today is the happiest day in my whole life, did you know?” “Just because I married you?” “Just because, even without loving me enought to think you should marry me, you married me to save me...” Simone looked to Cesar: “What do you mean?” “I know you would prefer not to marry me. I know you just married me because we are in war and…” “It is not true...” “You married me because you are afraid they call me to the war. Because you believe that if I’m married, they won’t do it, don’t you?” It was true, but… would Simone like Cesar discovering it? “No, of course not!” “It doesn’t matter, honey. It doesn’t matter, because… you married me and today is the happiest day in my life...” “So why are saying such disgusting words? Let’s concentrate in today, in being happy and in our future...” “I was called to war, Simone.” Simone looked scary to Cesar: “What do you mean?” “I received the letter this week and have to present me next week.” “But... now you are married, you don’t have to go. Do you?” “It is not true, honey... it is not true…” “But...” “They invented this story. Being married doesn’t avoid people being called. Being married, having jobs, having kids…” Cesar started to cry: “The war is so terrible that no one is being saved. A friend of mine, a little boy with three boys – one of them a newborn – was called...” “What will you do?” “I will fight, what would I do?” “You can run away. You can leave this country and...” “If they find me, I will be arrested as a nation enemy.” “You can’t leave me, Cesar, you can’t go to the war...” “I have no choice...” “So promise me you will be back.” “I can’t promise you. I... only can promise you I’ll fight as much as I can to come back...” Still crying, Cesar hugged Simone strongly. She was also crying. Everything was futile. Their marriage was futile... anyway, she still had tried... (03082013) | ||||||
