The Spy Chapter 2 – Part XIII Family dinners were pissing Simone off. Mainly because she had no family. Or she had – a half-blood sister who was not interested at all in her, who lived in another city… it was like she had no family. But... she had Cesar’s family. Or, more specifically, her mother, the one who “loved her like a daughter”. Cesar insisted that his mother loved his fiancée, and that she could not refuse going to the dinner, that his mother had invited her… No! No! Each second, Simone hated that more and more. That night, she thought serioysly about saying that she would not go. She could find a good excuse, what would be more prudent after all. But that was not so easy. Each time Cesar as becoming better in convincing her to do what she did not want to do, and that was the truth. And even if she tried to find excuses and other excuses, none of them were good enough to save her from her obligations. The last of them was something Simone had already told many different times, and that she was saying almost every day in those day: “Cesar, please, you know I don’t like your mother! She complains with me for anything. I can’t deal with her!” “This is not true, Simone, and I’ve already told you a million times. And if you want to be fine with me, my dear, after our wedding... you’ll have to deal with my mother, and you know it.” Cesar said, in his final point in that day. Losing the discussion, Simone had decided to go to that dinner. The dinner was exactly how Simone waited. Dorothy was talking and talking. Many clear praises to her son, many critics to her daughter in law. Simone smiled without saying anything, just looking her mother in law, but paying attention, in fact, in the television, that was transmitting the news. It was when they started to comment about the war. Dorothy decided to turn the television off: “I hate when they start to talk about this war. I’m so afraid about Cesar being called to it!” “They will never call me, mom!” Cesar answered: “Imagine, mom, with all those strong militaries, they will call a weak man like me?” “But, son, I’ve listened they are calling people that did not voluntary themselves, people who just did the mandatory service...” “Mom, I’ve told you, this is just a legend... I’m pretty sure they invented these news to worry people like you.” “I know. But... Nancy’s son is military. He told her the war is becoming really hard. Soon they will call people from mandatory service. They will just avoid those who are married or have family...” “Mommy, do you believe in it?” “Yes, I do. And I think that even without believing, you should protect yourself...” “Mommy!” “Yes, Cesar. You are engaged with a wonderful woman. Marry her and make a son with her as soon as possible. I would be so happy with a grandson and this grandson would protect you from that war...” Those last words were said with Doroth looking directly to Simone, who just left the table, angry: “That’s enough!” Cesar was scared: “What is happening, honey?” “Cesar, I can’t. I... I don’t love you so much to get married with you... and… That’s all. Forget me!” And without thinking again, without thinking about changing her mind... without thinking if she was right or wrong... and without assuring herself that she was right, Simone leaved Doroth’s house. She felt an indescribable sadness, but also a great relief. Which of them was stronger, however, she could not decide that moment. All she knew was that everything was over, and she would run away from that place – a place where she would never be back again. (10112012) | ||||||
