The Spy Chapter 2 – Part XIV Alex was intrigued with his luck. He knew how much it was import to have luck in his job. If he was still alive, it was because he had luck. It was because he was not with his parents in the day they were killed. It was because, when he became an orphan, he was sent to an orphanage, and not just abandoned in the streets. It was because, among so many children, he was the one they chose to be trained. It was because he had proved he was able to become a spy and do any mission they asked him to do. But his biggest victory was not surviving. His biggest luck was having an informant so close to him – living in the same place. Agatha. At first, she was just the owner of the inn’s daughter. A beautiful and delicate woman... but without great appeals. Not to him, at least. Not until she arrived at home using a military uniform. That called everybody’s attention. “Which is this clothes Agatha?” Pericles asked, doing exactly the same question everybody had in their minds. “What do you think? I was called.” “To do what?” “Working with the militaries..” “You? But...” “An old commander of my cousin came to talk with me and asked me if I wanted to work in the war. I’ll be doing common works, simple tasks, just to help them.” To Agatha, those were just simple tasks. But... no. Alex knew they were not. No general would invite the death soldier’s nice cousin to work with him without a good excuse. Even without that nice cousin knowing the real why. If Agatha had no idea why she had been called, Alex knew. He had listened comments about it: they were calling civilians to work in secret activities. Civilians had no idea what they were doing, so they would not lie if they were eventually asked about it. More: they would easily keep discretion and the secret – they did not know exactly what in what they were working with. Obviously it would be not easy to Alex to discover what exactly Agatha’s functions were. But he knew how to do it. He had already done harder things. Now... he had just to wait the right moment. And to be ready. “Hello, Agatha.” He said. She smiled – since her cousin’s funeral they were nearer: “Hello, Alex. Everything is fine? “Everything is completely fine.” He took a breath: “You know... I need to buy some clothes to me. Those I brought with me are getting old, and soon I’ll have problems with my clients. So I’ve thought… if you would mind to take me to some store you know and…” “Why don’t you ask to some of the boys here? They can probably help you…” “Yes, they can. But...” It was not that hard to him to pretend he was ashamed about what he would say next, because in fact he was: “If I went with some of them, I couldn’t... I mean... I think the female opinion in more important now. And...” “Are you inviting me to a date?” She smiled. “Only if you say you’ll accept it.” “Tomorrow. Is it ok to you? I’ll leave earlier, so I’ll find you here, we buy some clothes for you and you pay me the dinner.” Alex smiled. It sounded like his plan would work, after all. (25112012) | ||||||
