The spy Chapter 2 - Part IV

Simone looked the newspaper. In those days, it had just one subject: the war. The war, the war… war. She hated that war, she knew it. She hated it because she knew what a war meant and because it could occur many other things she was not able to know. Crisis, panic, destruction, death… she had never seen a war happening in her country, but she knew it could not be good.

With her it was César. He was eating his breakfast. He was calm, as if nothing was happening. In this moment, he looked Simone:

“Is there something wrong, honey?” he asked, observing her worried face: “Is there some bad news in the newspaper?”

“There is a war.” She answered: “Is that not bad enough?”

“Yes, there is a war. But… what could we do?”

“Cesar? There is a war in our territory! Our country is being attacked! Can we just ignore it?”

“They had no excuse to attack us. And they won’t be a problem.”

“People are dying because of this war. People from the attacked area are dying. And you tell me they won’t be a problem?”

“Of course a war brings with it problems, I can’t say that it doesn’t. But… I assure you that our government will solve this problem quickly.”

“Killing Sardenha people.”

“They started this war.”

“It does justify the war, doesn’t it?”

“No, it doesn’t, but, in my opinion, it looks like a good excuse to convince me to not be worried about it. I mean…”

“What about if you are convoked to fight, Cesar?”

Cesar laughed:

“I will never be convoked.”

“Why not?”

“They would never do it. I work, and…”

“You joined the arms…”

“It’s mandatory, Simone! All adult men did it. They won’t choose me to fight if they have more prepared people to do it. I mean, we have our military forces to do it, don’t we? To fight for us?”

Simone shocked her head, but told noting. She knew he could be wrong, but she also knew he could be right. Only time would answer this. (23062012)
