The spy Chapter 2 - Part III
Alex was on a table at that inn. It was breakfast time, and almost all the guests where there. It was the moment when they discussed about what was happening on the world. It was the moment when Alex felt what people from that country thought about his country… and what they knew about the war that was just starting. “How those bastards could shoot us? With which right they did it?” asked Sidney, while he sat on the same table that Alex. He was followed by Pericles, who answered : “A war without excuses, they started it for nothing... they should be ashamed about it!” “It’s against everything that is… right and… fair…” “We didn’t do anything to deserve that bomb…” Alex looked that discussion in silence. He had learned a very important thing: in enemy’s land, you just talk if you are invited to do so… “What do you think about it, Alex? Don’t you think those bastards are cowards dogs, and don’t deserve merci?” … and you don’t say what you think. “They were acting wrong.” Alex said, wetting his bread in the milk – a habit he disgusted, but that was common on Olimpia – “There are many things they should have done before attacking you, and they just attacked your country before doing those things. It’s despicable.” “Who says these words is a very clever man!” Pericles said: “And a man who has no reason to defend our country, because he is not from here…” “He’s making money here!” Lorins shouted. He was another guest there, and everybody knew him as xenophobic: “He was all the reason to declare he agrees with us.” “Shut up, Lorins.” Sidney said: “He could make money everywhere, if you want to know. And because you think like this we are here, with him, that is from Olimpia, and not with you, that is from here.” Lorins went to Alex’s table and looked Sidney, clearly threatening him: “I’m telling you: this kind of behavior will do that our country falls in disgrace.” So Lorins leaved the room. When he was distant enough, Sidney and Pericles started to laugh. “What that stupid fool old man is afraid of? We’ll destroy those losers with one hand. It’ll not be fun…” Pericles said. “It’ll not be fun. For them.” Sidney said: “Sardenha is over!” Alex finished his breakfast, smiling – a cynical smile and a smile of agreement. People from Coneva were not thinking seriously about that war. And that would make them lose it. But he would not say it to the enemy: his soldiers would show the reality in the camps….
