The Spy Chapter 3 – Part XI

Simone closed the door of the car slowly. She had waited Cesar’s plane leave, and so she drove without a destiny for a while. She did not want to believe her husband had entered in that airplane, she did not want to believe her husband had gone to the war. She did not want to believe she was alone. She did not want to believe in the risk he had against him.

When she got tired, she thought about what she would do. She had spent her last days at Cesar’s house, and officially that was her house, now, but the idea of going back there and staying there was somewhat disturbing. She decided: she would take her things and go back to her house, where she would feel better at that time.

Thinking in that, she drove to her husband’s address. When she arrived there, she was luggage in front of the door, which was open. She entered the house and found Dorothy, her mother in law, in the living room.

“Hello, Mrs. Dorothy.”

“Hello, Simone.”

The silence was worst than anything that could be said in that moment.

“He took the airplane.”

“And you did nothing to avoid it.”

“What could I do?”

“If you had married him before. If you had gotten pregnant and…”

Simone started to cry:

“It’d made no difference, Mrs. Dorothy, and he would still...”

“You are forbidden to cry.” Cried Dorothy: “I do not accept you crying and I do not accept you here, in my son’s house.”

“Mrs. Dorothy?”

“All your things are in that luggage, in front of the door. I want you out of here. You’ll only be back when Cesar comes back to me. In this moment, I’ll see if you married him by interest or not.”

“Which kind of interest I would have in this marriage?”

“You probably know your answer. No get out.”

Simone took a deep breath and leaved that house. She could try to discuss with her mother in law, but she had no power to do it. It would be better and more prudent just to take her things and leave.
