The Spy Chapter 3 - Part IX

Alex was looking the horizon from the window of his room. It was possible to note who empty the streets were. What he could not say was if this happened because people were afraid of leaving home or just because each day more and more people were called to fight in the war.

At the same time, everything looked very familiar in that place. Those few people who were still there were trying to do everything in the same way they always did. That was a very fun thing: people suffered with the war, but… they behaved like they were not doing it. The war was destroying their homes, but not their buildings. It was taking their employees, but they still had jobs.

For some seconds, Alex let himself think about a subject he was used to avoid: his own country. He was not thinking about his friends, because he did not have any, but normal people. People for whom he was there, in a strange place, in that moment. Would they feel the same tension that those boys, who lived in that inn with him? Would they be more alert, more despair?

While he was letting himself daydream, someone knocked his door.

“Mister Alex, your letters!”

He opened his door and took the letters that were brought by a teenager who lived there with his mother. They were five letters – mainly advertisement. He had subscribed himself to receive that kind of letter as part of his disguise – they would camouflage the important letters he would receive.

“There is a letter that has a mistake, Mister Alex.”

“Really? Why do you say so?”

“It is an advertisement. But they wrote ‘surprise us’. But I guess they wanted to write ‘surprise you.’.”

“Yes, you’re problaby right. Thank you for the letters.”

The boy leaved and Alex started to check those envelopes. He paid special attention in the one with the mistake. He did not have to looked it to be sure: that was not a mistake at all…
