The Spy Chapter 4 – Part VIII The sound signaled another funeral, another person who was killed on the war. Another one. Those funerals happened almost every day, now. What did not mean it was easier to deal with them. Alex saw that funeral from his inn. Pericles, another guest, also heard its sound, and said: “Another soul goes there. Until when will this happen?” Alex just shacked his head. Pericles just kept talking: “We should finish this war, win this stupid war and bring our men back home.” “Do you really think you are winning this war?” the spy asked, in a almost careless way. He was tired of listening that victorious speech, even when so many things showed it was wrong. “What do you mean?” “All the time another person is sent to home inside coffins. Letter and more letters of convocation are being sent. I don’t know how you are still here! Calling civilians to fight is not a good military decision, but it sounds like a desperate act, an act of someone who has no other option – someone who is losing the war. You should declare as soon as possible you lost this war and finish it...” Pericles stood up as he wanted to beat Alex. But he changed his mind, and just shouted: “You should think better about what you are talking, Alex. This country accepted you and your business here. You shouldn’t say this kind of words about the country that feed you”. And, furious, he leaved that room. (20012014 – published on 02022014) | ||||||
