The Spy Chapter 1 – Part XI Alex bought a newspaper. He would read it while drinking a coffee. He would drink a coffee while waiting. He would wait while he could. He had received information that in that day he would receive data about his new mission. He had done everything he was asked for: he had entered in that country, he had mixed with people from there, pretending to be a seller from Olympia, he had recognized the area where he was living, he had prepared what was necessary to the next point. Now he had to wait for this next mission, and was angry about it: he was feeling the sensation he was doing nothing and was futile. He did not want to be futile. He had trained a lot to be useful. News in the newspaper made him angrier. Again he was reading froths about a world that was pretending to be normal. A world that was pretending that nothing was happening. How could they do that? He was thinking about it while drinking his coffee. So, he listened someone in other table: “I understand your point of view, honey. You don’t like my mother, even though she loves you. I don’t want to discuss it with you, not today. Hey, listen. Hey! She’s my mother, Simone. I can’t just say she can’t be part of my life! Hey! Ok. I won’t discuss it with you. I’ll meet you tonight and mom tomorrow. I’ll talk with her, so she’ll understand you couldn’t go with us. I’ll convince her you couldn’t. Ok? Are you satisfied? You are discussing with my mother and she can’t understand why! She… she’s an angel, she loves you and you complain about her, complain about foolishness, and… yes… yes, it is! Hey… do you want to know? Since I asked you to marry me, you are fighting with me all the time. You are arguing with me all the time. No? Really? Ok... let’s talk another time, ok? I’ll meet you at your place, ok? Simone... Simone, please, understand me: I love you. You are the only woman in my life. For me, you are the most important woman. Do you understand? Can you understand it? Let’s do one thing: I’ll GO to your home and we’ll talk. I won’t discuss it by phone anymore! I’ll be there in 10 minutes. Ok, so be calm. All right? I love you. And this should be what matters, shouldn’t be? All right, all right. So we decided... No, I know that...” The guy in that table got up and walked away, so Alex could not listen to the end of that conversation. But he was laughing: people pretending nothing was happening. People really believed that it was important to discuss with their brides, girlfriends, wives or affairs for small things while something really big was to happen. It was not their fault. Newspapers did not talked about that subject. It just had a small note about it: a note about a movement of troops that was disturbing the diplomatic relationship. A small note, that… That was not there anymore. While Alex was distracted, listening to that discussion, someone had changed his newspaper. To everybody else, it would look like a normal newspaper, exactly like the one he was reading a few minutes ago. For him, it was more than this. He had to concentrate to discovery what they wanted to tell him, so he got up, paid his bill and went to home, to read about his mission. (01052012) | ||||||
